Terron Cooper Sorrells is a contemporary artist born in Portsmouth,Va in September,1994. A lover of arts who has literally been practicing his entire life,Ron won the enviable title of “artist of the week” with a drawing he made at age six.

Actively involved in some sort of extracurricular art program since the fifth grade, which consisted of a variety of practices including drawing, sculpture and airbrushing,Ron developed intense passion for arts. He was later admitted into the Magnet and Ap Art programs in high school as well as the Summer Residential Governor’s Program. He further studied painting and printmaking at the Maryland Institute College of Art(MICA), graduating with a BFA in 2016.

One of his major reasons for specializing in painting is the ability to vividly create whole realities, new representations and correct histories. To him,the power is very alluring, then again the only other form of art that moves him the way painting does is music but he wasn’t good enough with the piano to pursue that.

Ron gains a lot of his technical inspiration from the northern renaissance artists like Jan Van Eyck and Albrect Durer, with a good wealth coming from the 1600s painters like Caravaggio,Rembrandt and Rubens. Conceptually he looks to the colors of artists like Jacob Lawrence, the gumption of Kara Walker and the scale of Kerry James Marshall.

Terron has had three solo exhibitions to date: in DC,LA and New York City. He’s also had quite a number of group exhibitions, one notably in Dubai,UAE titled “Unity”. In the next five years he believes he will become a household name in the art world and secure his first solo museum exhibition.

With almost all his works being pretty large and immersive, when viewers approach them,he wants them to feel as if they have stepped into the scenes of whichever work they’re viewing. Secondly, there is a narrative in majority of his paintings,so part of the experience is discovering the story and also the last thing he considers is cultural significance.

Nothing makes him want to create more than having someone tell him his images needed to exist, this reaffirms that there’s a greater purpose for all of this. Consistently putting in work,Ron has big goals for the future of his works and seeks to work hard to achieve them.

Ultimately,he’s love to see his works hanging in American art wings all over the states. He definitely has international aspirations but to him it’s most important that his people see themselves represented in these institutions.
