MATTHEW EGUAVOEN

Known for addressing issues that affect his immediate surroundings, country and continent with his paintings, Matthew Imuetiyan Eguavoen is a Lagos based Nigerian contemporary artist and a native of Edo State, born in 1988.

Self reflection in the restroom

Greatly inspired by the experience of both himself and that of others, Matthew is a self taught artist who began to indulge his passion for art at age 25 while furthering his education to obtain a bachelorโ€™s in science for civil and engineering structures at the University of Port Harcourt.

The tree of life

When asked about his reason for being a contemporary artist, he said โ€œ I chose contemporary art because it helps me talk about issues that affect me in the presentโ€.

Nothing new under the sun

This is the reason why each piece is amusingly intriguing, effortlessly leaving viewers captivated and involved in the piece being stared at.

In good company

As an artist who is constantly building momentum and consistency, Matthew has had several exhibitions in and across Europe, USA and Africa.

This luggage has family members in it

Grateful for the opportunities and exposure, heโ€™s propelled to keep creating and painting pieces that spark conversations, remain meaningful and substantive while proffering solutions to human challenges, now and in years to come.
